The game:
Fun Sticks – Yr 1 & 2’s
This is an introduction to hockey, the aim being to develop hockey skills in a fun way, with a high level of participation and lots of small games.
Mini Sticks – Yr 3 & 4’s
This is a six a-side mixed gender game. Depending on the skills of the players the game can be played on an 1/8 field or 1/4 field format. Beginners and younger players normally play on the smaller field.
Kiwi Sticks – Yr 5 & 6’s
This is a six a-side mixed gender game. Depending on the skills and age of the players they are graded, generally there are 8 grades, the top 4 grades playing on a 1/2 field format with penalty corners being included in the rules, the lower 4 grades playing on 1/4 field.
Location:
Fun Sticks – Will be held at Pillans Point School as a satellite location
Mini Sticks – These are played at Tauranga Hockey Centre (THC) Blake Park, Mount Maunganui
Kiwi Sticks – The majority of games are played at Tauranga Hockey Centre (THC) Blake Park, but some are also played at schools around the area i.e. Bethlehem College, Aquinas & Otumoetai Intermediate
Season dates:
Fun Sticks – To start in Term 2, and be played on Thursday’s, starting on Thursday 17th May.
Mini & Kiwi Sticks – Played on Saturdays starting on Saturday 12th May, end of season fun games and prize giving on 15th September (No games in the School holidays – Sat 14th July and Sat 21st July)
Game times:
Fun Sticks – After school, from 3 – 4pm.
Mini & Kiwi Sticks – Games are played on Saturday mornings sometime between 8.30pm – 1.00pm
(2 x 20 min halves per game). The draw is e-mailed to the managers to distribute to their team before the game, alternatively you can check the draw directly, under tab above.
Practises will take place at school lunchtimes / after school, days and times to be confirmed by the coach.
Cost:
Fun Sticks (Yr 1 & 2’s) – $50 for a twelve week programme. This includes borrowing the equipment (sticks, goal posts etc) and the programme facilitator.
Mini Sticks (Yr 3 & 4’s) – $60
Kiwi Sticks (Yr 5 & 6’s) – $60

Uniform:
Fun Sticks – No sports uniform required, they just wear their school uniform with the addition of items below* No need to bring sticks as these are provided.
The Year 3 – 6 children (Mini & Kiwi Stick players) will need to wear the school sports uniform for their games. This can be purchased from the uniform shop on Monday and Friday mornings between 8.30am – 9.00am and Wednesday afternoons between 2.30pm and 3.00pm. If this isn’t convenient please contact Lianne (liannec@pillanspoint.school.nz) to make an alternative time. They will also be expected to have their own pair of navy knee high sports socks as part of the uniform. Children will need their own stick.
* It is also compulsory for all players to wear shin pads and a mouth guard as well as covered shoes *
